Maruti Suzuki is all set to make its big move into the electric vehicle (EV) segment with its first-ever electric SUV, the e-Vitara. The company is preparing to launch this much-awaited model in India by December, marking a new chapter in its journey toward sustainable mobility.

A Major Milestone for India’s EV Ecosystem

The road to the e-Vitara’s launch began when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat on August 26. During the same event, he flagged off the export of the e-Vitara, establishing a major milestone in India’s growing EV ecosystem.

This development not only highlights Maruti Suzuki’s electric ambitions but also strengthens India’s position as a global hub for clean mobility technology.

A Global Electric SUV Made in India

The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara is being presented as a global electric SUV designed and built in India for the world. The company has already started exporting the model to more than 100 countries, including major markets such as Europe and Japan.

On September 1, Maruti Suzuki began shipping the e-Vitara from Pipavav Port in Gujarat, sending over 2,900 units to 12 European countries — including the UK, Germany, Norway, France, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Austria, and Belgium. This strong export push clearly shows the brand’s confidence in the global appeal and quality of the e-Vitara.

Dimensions and Powertrain Options

The e-Vitara measures 4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, offering a solid and spacious design. It features a 3-in-1 electric system that integrates the motor, inverter, and transmission into one compact unit for improved efficiency.

Buyers will be able to choose between two battery options:

  • A 49 kWh battery with a front motor producing 144 hp and 189 Nm of torque.
  • A 61 kWh battery with a more powerful 174 hp motor generating the same torque output.

For enthusiasts looking for extra performance, the larger battery is expected to offer an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version, which adds a 65 hp rear motor, delivering a combined output of 184 hp and 300 Nm. This variant could offer a driving range of over 500 km on a single charge, making it ideal for both city drives and long journeys.

Interior and Features

Inside, the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara promises a premium and feature-rich cabin. The design blends technology with comfort, creating a modern and inviting atmosphere. Highlights include a digital cockpit, twin-deck floating console, soft-touch dual-tone surfaces, and multi-color ambient lighting.

The SUV also comes with a fixed-glass sunroof, a newly designed steering wheel, and a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen paired with a 10.25-inch digital driver display. Connectivity features such as wireless smartphone integration and a Harman-tuned audio system add to the overall luxury experience.

Safety and Build Quality

Maruti Suzuki has placed a strong emphasis on safety with the e-Vitara. The body uses over 50% high-tensile steel, offering excellent rigidity and crash protection. The model also comes with an advanced battery safety system to ensure stability under all driving conditions.

Standard safety equipment includes seven airbags (including a driver knee airbag), electronic parking brake, all-disc brakes, e-Call emergency function, and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). On top of that, the e-Vitara will offer Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) for added protection and driver confidence.

Final Thoughts

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara marks a bold step forward for India’s largest carmaker. With its advanced technology, global design, and strong safety package, it aims to compete not just in the Indian market but also on an international scale. As Maruti Suzuki begins its electric journey, the e-Vitara could become the benchmark for affordable, efficient, and globally competitive electric SUVs made in India.
