Buying an electric car in Nigeria is no longer the hard part. Charging it is. Import duty relief has made EVs cheaper to land than they were two years ago, and dealers in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt now stock everything from imported Teslas to locally assembled runabouts. But the question every serious buyer eventually asks is the practical one: where do I actually plug this thing in, and what will it cost me per month?

This guide answers that with the numbers as they stand in September 2026 — where the public chargers are, what operators charge per kWh, what home charging really costs on a Band A tariff, and where the whole system still falls down.

How many public EV chargers does Nigeria actually have?

Fewer than the headlines suggest. Industry counts put the country at roughly 48 public charging stations as of late 2025, and Nigeria’s own Energy Transition Plan projects only around 60 stations by 2030. For a country of more than 200 million people spread across 36 states, that is a rounding error.

The concentration is extreme. Lagos alone accounts for around 22 confirmed public stations in 2026 — close to half the national total. Abuja has a small cluster around the airport road and the central business district. Outside those two cities, public charging is effectively a planning exercise rather than a service you can rely on.

Who runs the chargers in Lagos

  • MAX — the largest single network in Lagos, with around 16 sites spread across Lekki, Ajah, Ikoyi, Ikeja, Yaba, Surulere, Egbeda and Alapere. Much of this network was built for two-wheeler and fleet use, so check compatibility before you drive across town.
  • Qoray Mobility — around four sites, including 60kW DC fast chargers at the Sheraton and the Marriott in Ikeja. This is the closest thing Lagos has to genuine fast charging.
  • SAGLEV — operates Nigeria’s first mall-based charger at Mega Plaza, Victoria Island.
  • University of Lagos — hosts a solar-powered pilot station, a preview of where a lot of this is heading.

Two warnings that matter more in Nigeria than almost anywhere else. First, a station appearing on a map app does not mean it is energised, staffed or working today — call ahead. Second, connector standards are not settled here. A car imported from the United States, one from China and one from Europe may not share a plug. Confirm your connector type before you rely on any site.

What does it cost to charge an electric car in Nigeria?

There are three realistic ways to charge, and they are priced very differently.

1. Public charging

Published rates from Qoray Mobility start at roughly ₦300 per kWh for AC charging and around ₦500 per kWh for DC fast charging. Other operators price in a similar band, and rates move with the diesel and electricity costs the operator is carrying.

To put that in context, using an illustrative 50kWh battery: a full charge at ₦500/kWh works out to about ₦25,000. At ₦300/kWh it is around ₦15,000. Your own car’s battery size will change that figure substantially — treat this as arithmetic, not a quote.

2. Home charging on grid power

This is where EV ownership in Nigeria actually makes financial sense. Band A customers are currently billed in the region of ₦206.80 to ₦225 per kWh depending on the distribution company, with NERC’s approved Band A rate sitting at ₦225/kWh and Ikeja Electric charging ₦206.80/kWh at the time of writing.

On a 50kWh battery at ₦225/kWh, a full charge is roughly ₦11,250 — less than half the cost of the same charge at a DC fast charger. Compared with petrol at recent pump and depot levels of around ₦1,310 per litre, a petrol saloon doing 10km to the litre costs about ₦131 per kilometre in fuel alone. The same illustrative EV charged at home, assuming a conservative 300km of real-world range, works out closer to ₦38 per kilometre.

That gap is the entire economic case for an EV in Nigeria. It is real — but it only holds if your Band A supply actually shows up.

3. Solar charging

A growing number of owners skip the grid argument entirely and charge from solar with battery storage. The upfront cost is heavy, and a system large enough to meaningfully charge a car is a serious capital item, not an accessory. But it removes both the tariff and the outage risk, and it is the reason the conversation among installers has shifted from single chargers to energy-integrated sites combining solar, storage and smart metering. For anyone already running a solar and inverter setup at home, adding EV charging capacity is a far smaller incremental step than starting from scratch.

The generator trap

It needs saying plainly: charging an EV from a petrol generator destroys the economics. You are buying fuel at pump prices, running it through a generator that is far less efficient than a power station, and then storing it in a battery. Anyone whose fallback plan for a poor grid area is “I’ll just put it on the gen” should price that carefully before buying an EV. In that situation a CNG conversion or an efficient petrol car is often the more honest answer.

Two-wheelers are moving faster than cars

The most functional EV charging network in Nigeria today is not for cars at all — it is battery swapping for motorcycles.

Spiro has been building a swap network where a rider exchanges a depleted battery for a charged one in under a minute, no waiting. The company grew from 64 active stations to more than 100 in Nigeria over 2025 and has publicly targeted 2,000 stations nationwide, and by mid-2026 reported around 100,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 swap stations deployed across its African markets, which include Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Togo, Benin and Cameroon. Spiro has quoted ₦1,440,000 as the retail price of its Ekon electric bike in Nigeria.

Startups such as AaraGO are running solar-powered swap stations on the same principle. For okada and delivery riders, this model sidesteps the two things that break EV car ownership here: long charge times and unreliable grid power. If you ride commercially, the swap networks are worth more attention than the car charging map.

The policy picture: what is coming

Several moving pieces will shape charging availability over the next few years. Treat these as direction of travel rather than settled law — several are proposals or memoranda, not enacted regulation.

  1. A charging mandate for filling stations. Existing fuel stations are being pushed to install EV charging points, with tax incentives offered to make the transition into dual-use energy hubs easier. Shafa Energy has publicly committed to deploying charging points across its A.Y.M Shafa filling stations nationwide.
  2. Regulatory frameworks in development. The FRSC and NMDPRA have begun developing EV and charging infrastructure frameworks. These are policy directions at this stage, not finalised rules.
  3. The Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill, 2025. As drafted, it would require government agencies to prioritise locally assembled EVs in their fleets — creating the baseline demand that makes private charging investment bankable.
  4. Local assembly. The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Asian Economic Development Committee covering an EV assembly plant in Kano, alongside a pledge to deploy a countrywide charging network.
  5. Market forecasts. Nigeria’s EV charging market has been valued at about USD 1.24 billion in 2025 with projections of roughly USD 13.97 billion by 2035 at a 27.40% CAGR. Forecasts of that shape are best read as an investment thesis rather than a promise.

Industry bodies including the ACCI, the NADDC and Surge Africa have been publicly pressing for faster e-mobility infrastructure build-out, which tells you the pressure is coming from both government and private sector — but also that the gap is still wide enough to be worth campaigning about.

Should you buy an EV in Nigeria right now?

An honest answer depends almost entirely on your situation, not on the car.

An EV probably works for you if:

  • You live and work within Lagos or central Abuja and rarely drive intercity.
  • You have a dedicated parking space where a charger can be installed.
  • You have Band A supply, solar with storage, or both.
  • Your daily mileage sits comfortably inside your car’s real-world range with margin to spare.

An EV probably does not work for you if:

  • You regularly drive between cities — Lagos to Ibadan, Abuja to Kaduna, anything into the South East or North.
  • You park on the street or in shared compound parking with no charging point.
  • Your area gets a handful of hours of grid power a day and your fallback is a generator.
  • You need guaranteed same-day repair. Trained EV technicians and spare parts remain thin outside a few Lagos workshops, and a battery or inverter fault can leave a car parked for weeks.
