As hybrid vehicles begin to carve out a stronger presence in India, Mahindra & Mahindra is preparing to step into this evolving segment. Growing customer interest and changing automotive trends are prompting carmakers to explore fuel-efficient, eco-friendly alternatives. Mahindra is now working on both strong hybrid and range-extender hybrid technologies to be used in its upcoming SUV range.
Hybrid Powertrain with Turbocharged Petrol Engine
Mahindra’s hybrid strategy involves integrating these systems across both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and born-electric SUVs. For ICE models, Mahindra is exploring the use of a series-parallel hybrid system, while its electric vehicles may utilize a range-extender hybrid setup. These hybrid configurations are expected to be paired exclusively with a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.
Upcoming Mahindra Hybrid SUVs to Watch
Mahindra is planning to launch several hybrid SUVs in the near future. Among them is the XUV 3XO, which is expected to arrive by 2026 with a series-parallel hybrid powertrain. In addition, newly unveiled electric SUVs like the Mahindra BE 6 and the XEV 9e may also incorporate hybrid systems. Although specific release dates for these models have not been confirmed, they indicate Mahindra’s serious interest in hybrid technology.
Mahindra’s Official Stand on Hybrids
As of now, Mahindra & Mahindra has not issued an official statement regarding its hybrid vehicle roadmap or the specific models that will adopt the technology. However, ongoing developments suggest that hybrid options will become a part of its future product strategy.

Understanding Range Extender Hybrids
A range extender hybrid, often called a range-extended electric vehicle, includes a small internal combustion engine or generator. This unit is not used to power the wheels but instead recharges the battery, allowing the electric motor to keep the vehicle moving. This setup reduces range anxiety commonly associated with electric cars. However, compared to strong hybrids, range extender models usually have lower fuel efficiency and require more frequent servicing.

How the Series-Parallel Hybrid System Functions
The series-parallel hybrid system is a combination of two traditional hybrid technologies: series and parallel. It incorporates an engine, electric motor, and battery to provide optimal performance. In city conditions, the system runs mainly on the electric motor powered by the battery. When cruising at higher speeds, it switches to engine-only mode for better mileage. The system also uses regenerative braking, where the motor acts as a generator to recharge the battery during deceleration.
